We just hired another bright person, so I recently reviewed our Employee Handbook--mostly a guide filled with an overview of nuts and bolts and some legal stuff our lawyers included. At the very end I came across a small paragraph meant to give new employees a window into our culture and what we expect. After 10 years, I still like it. Here it is: "Our environment is decidedly not corporate. Professional, yes, but in a way that encourages people to be themselves. We look for hard working individuals that are driven without the oversized ego. We like honest and direct, but courteous. In other words, no assholes please. Work smart, seize opportunities, make it your own and enjoy the rewards. Bring your energy, curiosity and belief in self—they are your most valuable assets. You can take many roads and we appreciate the one that led you here. As you continue your journey we ask, when given the choice, that you always take the high road and embrace the one less traveled. We encourage you to fail. While it’s an important part of the learning curve, try not to fail at the exact same thing twice. By design we are entrepreneurial, pro-active, supportive -- we want to share our success with you and celebrate your contribution to it. We believe that “work” is a means to personal fruition. You officially have the freedom to make this worthwhile concept a reality."
